Unit Converter
Convert length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed, time, data, and energy units accurately and instantly. Free online unit converter.
Convert between everyday units across length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed, time, data size and energy. Enter a value, choose the two units, and read the result — with a swap button to reverse the direction. It is the tool for the moment a number is in the wrong units: a recipe in ounces and a scale in grams, a document in inches and a printer in millimetres, a file-size limit quoted in MB when you are looking at bytes, or a thermostat in Fahrenheit when you think in Celsius. Conversions run in the browser with standard factors, so nothing you type is transmitted.
How to use Unit Converter
- Pick a category — Length, Weight, Temperature, Area, Volume, Speed, Time, Data size or Energy. The category decides which units are offered.
- Enter your value and choose the "from" and "to" units.
- Read the converted result, or press the swap button to reverse the direction without retyping the number.
Who it is for
Unit Converter is for the moment a number is in the wrong units: a recipe in ounces and a scale in grams, a document in inches and a printer in millimetres, a file size limit listed in MB when you have bytes, or a temperature in Fahrenheit and a thermostat in Celsius.
How it works
- Categories cover length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed, time, data size and energy, each with its own set of units.
- Conversions use standard factors, with the temperature scale using its offset formula rather than a plain multiply — the one category where a ratio is not enough.
- A swap button reverses the direction, and everything runs in the browser.
What it cannot do
- Data size uses one convention for MB, while storage manufacturers and some systems use another — a 1 TB drive never shows 1 TB in an operating system.
- Rounding is applied for display, so a chain of conversions can drift slightly. Convert once from the original value rather than repeatedly.
- Currency is not included, because a rate needs a live source and this tool has none.
- Unusual or historical units are not covered.
Frequently asked questions
Are the conversion factors accurate?
Yes. The tool uses internationally standardized factors — for example, 1 inch = 0.0254 m and 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg — and handles temperature with proper offsets rather than simple ratios. Those exact definitions are why a conversion is repeatable rather than approximate.
Does it convert temperature correctly?
Yes. Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin are converted through their real formulas, not just multiplied, so results are exact. Temperature is the one category where a plain ratio would be wrong, because the scales have different zero points as well as different-sized degrees.
What's the difference between MB and MiB?
MB is decimal (1,000,000 bytes) and MiB is binary (1,048,576 bytes). Both are offered in the Data size category so you can convert either way. This is why a "1 TB" drive never shows 1 TB in an operating system: the manufacturer counts decimal, the system counts binary.
Can I convert months and years?
Yes, in the Time category. These use average Gregorian values (a month is about 30.44 days) so long-range conversions stay consistent. A calendar month is not a fixed length, so an average is the only defensible figure for a general conversion.
Why does a chain of conversions drift?
Because each result is rounded for display. Convert once from the original value rather than repeatedly converting the output, or the rounding compounds.
Can I convert currency?
No. A currency conversion needs a live exchange rate, and there is no rate source in this tool — anything it displayed would be stale the moment it was written.
