Change an image's pixel dimensions precisely, in your browser, without uploading it. Resize Image takes a width and a height and, with "Keep aspect ratio" on, works out the other dimension for you so the picture is not stretched. Fill in one box and leave the other blank to scale proportionally. It is the tool for meeting a site's upload limits or shrinking enormous camera files.
How to use Resize Image
- Click "Select image files" and choose the picture.
- Leave "Keep aspect ratio" ticked, then type a width and leave height blank — the height follows automatically. If you fill both boxes with the option still ticked, the width wins and the height is recalculated from it.
- If you need an exact box size regardless of proportions, untick the option and enter both numbers, accepting that the image will be stretched.
- Click "Resize Image" and download.
Who it is for
Resize Image is for making a picture the exact pixel size something expects: a profile photo that must be 400×400, a banner with a dimension limit, a photo slot in a template, or a huge camera file that has no business being that large on a web page.
How it works
- With the aspect ratio locked, filling one box calculates the other, so the picture scales without distortion.
- Unticking the lock forces both dimensions, which stretches the image if the proportions differ — deliberate, for an exact box.
- The result is redrawn at the new size on a canvas and saved in the same format family.
What it cannot do
- Enlarging interpolates: no detail is invented, so the result looks softer rather than sharper.
- With the lock on and both boxes filled, the width wins and the height is recalculated — an exact box needs the lock off.
- Resizing does not compress. If the file is still too heavy at the right dimensions, run it through Compress Image afterwards.
- Dimensions are capped, so an absurd value is clamped rather than attempted.
Frequently asked questions
Should I resize or compress?
Resize when the pixel dimensions are the problem — a 6000px photo going into a 1200px slot. Compress when the dimensions are right and the file is just too heavy. Resizing almost always saves more bytes, because there are fewer pixels to store.
What happens if I untick "Keep aspect ratio"?
The image is forced to the width and height you gave, which distorts it if the proportions differ from the original. Useful for a deliberately exact box, wrong for a photograph of a person.
Can I enlarge an image?
You can, up to the maximum the tool accepts, but the result is interpolated: no detail is invented, so it looks softer rather than sharper. Never enlarge a small image to fill a large slot unless you accept that.
Which formats does it output?
The image is redrawn to a canvas and saved in the same family, so a JPG stays a JPG and a PNG stays a PNG. To change format as well, use Convert Image afterwards.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Resizing happens on your device and the result is produced in the browser, so nothing is transmitted.
