Add Page Numbers

Insert page numbers into a PDF, positioned how you like.

Runs in your browser — your file never leaves your device.

Add page numbers to a PDF that has none. Choose where the number sits, its typeface, size and colour, and whether it reads "3" or "3 of 12". You can also start the count at a number other than 1, which is what you need when a document is part two of a set. Numbers are written as real text on each page, so they print and stay sharp. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

How to use Add Page Numbers

  1. Click "Select PDF file" and choose the PDF to number.
  2. Pick a position — bottom centre is the default and the one most readers expect. Bottom right suits formal reports; top centre works for documents that already use the bottom edge.
  3. Set the typeface, size and colour to match the document. The style row shows the face you have picked; the number is committed when you click the final button.
  4. Set "Start numbering at" if this file continues another, then tick "Show page X of N" if you want the total included — the label then reads "4 of 12".
  5. Click "Add Page Numbers" and download the numbered copy.

Who it is for

Add Page Numbers is for documents that will be printed, collated or referred to by page: contracts, reports, dissertations, board packs, manuals. It is the small step that makes a document usable on paper, and it also makes page removal detectable — a gap in a numbered sequence is hard to hide.

How it works

  • The number is drawn as real text in a font you choose, in the margin rather than on the text block, so it prints and stays sharp.
  • The counter can start at a number other than 1, which is what a multi-part document needs when part two continues part one's sequence.
  • The optional total produces "4 of 12" rather than just "4", which is what makes a missing page obvious.

What it cannot do

  • It cannot remove numbers that are already on the page. Use Crop PDF on the margin, or rebuild the page, if a scanner burned them in.
  • Every page is numbered; skipping a cover means splitting the cover off first and merging it back.
  • There is no preview of the final placement, so check the first page of the output before running a long document.
  • Placement sits in the margin, so a document with almost no bottom margin can collide with the text.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove numbers that are already on the page?

No. This tool only draws new ones, so it is meant for a document with no numbering at all. If a scanner burned numbers into the corner and you need them gone, crop the margin they sit in with Crop PDF, or flatten the page to an image first and rebuild it — neither restores the missing edge of the page, so check the result before relying on it.

Can I skip the first page, like a cover sheet?

Not directly. The tool numbers every page it is given. Split the cover off first with Split PDF, number the body, then merge the two back together with Merge PDF — the body keeps its own sequence and the cover stays unnumbered. The alternative most people settle for is numbering everything and accepting a number on the cover, which reads perfectly well on most documents.

Does "page X of N" count the pages it is written on?

Yes. N is the total number of pages in the document you loaded, including any cover. If you started numbering at 5, the second part of the label follows the sequence you set rather than the physical page index.

What format do the numbers use?

Plain digits in the typeface you choose — nobody is locked to a browser default. The sixteen optional faces include Lato, Poppins, Fira Sans, PT Serif and Courier Prime, so a serif report or a mono technical document can match its own body text.

Will the numbers overlap existing content?

They sit in the page margin rather than on top of the text block, so a page with normal margins is safe. In a document with almost no bottom margin, choose the top instead. Run the tool on a copy and look at the result before committing — the placement is applied at save time, so this is the one setting worth checking on the output.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The PDF is opened and saved inside your browser, so nothing is transmitted. No account is needed and no watermark is added — only your numbers.
